Central Armed Forces Museum: Russian Imperial Army, Red Army, Soviet Army. The history. The Central Armed Forces Museum is one the world's greatest places to see military history of the Great War, Revolution, Civil War and Allies Intervention in Russia, the Soviet-Finland war, the World War II and the Soviet period. It was founded in 1919 and every year receives about 1 million visitors. There are 24 halls showing the history of the Russian Imperial, White, Red and Soviet Army and Navy from the beginning of the 18 th century until today. The collection includes over 800 000 military-historical items.
Among the museum's rarities are: Russian Imperial and White Army, the Civil War, Revolution: uniforms, orders, flags, arms, documents and belongings of family of Tsar Nicolas II and generals Skobelev, Denikin, Alekseev, baron Ungern von Sternberg. Saint Nicolas banners of general Wrangel etc. Red Army, the Civil War in Russia. The banners of the Red Army regiments fought vs.. British/ American Expeditionary Forces near Archangels. The uniforms and arms of the famous Red Army commanders: Frunze, Budenny etc. Soviet Army, the WWII. Most of banners including the Victory Banner, the symbol of victory over Nazis, raised over the Reichstag building in Berlin in May 1945. Decorations of famous government and military leaders such as Stalin, Zhukov, Rokossovsky and others Trophies of WWII: Nazi flags, uniforms, documents, weapons and even items which belonged to Hitler, Rommel, Goering and others leaders of the German Army. Soviet Army: the Cold War. The wreckage of the American U2 spy plane piloted by Francis Gary Powers and shot down by Soviet anti-aircraft defense troops in May 1960. An outdoor display with 200 samples of weapons and battle vehicles (armoured train of 1918-1920), T-34, JS-2 tanks, BM-13 "Katusha" rocket launcher (1941-1945), modern artillery, rockets and missiles, T-80 tank, S-300 antiaircraft launcher, SU-24 supersonic bomber, MIG-29 and SU-27 fighters, Soviet and American SS-20 and Pershing-2 missiles, armored vehicles and others.
